Canon continues to dominate the camera market and with that comes the oversaturation of choice in terms of optics.

Canon 77D sports a 24 MPx sensor with a Dual Pixel autofocus and DIGIC 7 processor.

It also has a three-inch touchscreen LC, along with dual control dials. Its focus system uses all-cross-type phase detection, thus making the 77D a solid piece of equipment.

So how does this camera become even better? With the best lenses to put on the Canon’s solid body!

Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 Lens
4.0
$379.00

In terms of image quality, it surpasses the competition in all regards. The bokeh effect is mesmerizing. It has a solid design and it falls into the lightweight category.

Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM is designed with seven elements in six groups with eight diaphragm blades. It sets the minimum focus distance at 17,8 inches. The lens uses two high-refraction lens elements and Gaussian optics which reduce astigmatism.

Moreover:

Its super multi-layer coat reduces flaring and ghosting. The first thing I noticed with this lens is the great contrast which wasn’t too harsh, along with solid overall image quality. The bokeh effect was another reason why this is the best Canon 77D prime lens. It provides creamy backgrounds while isolating subjects in focus. The aperture of an f/1.4 allowed me to take artistic photos, yet it can be tricky to get the picture every time due to the shallow depth of field.

The solution I found with this issue is to use an f/2.5 opening, thus eliminating overwhelming blur, yet retaining enough light to take sharp and low-noise images. Another great thing is the USM focus, which reacts fast and it is reasonably quiet for everyday purposes. The design of the lens is solid, although far from the perfect “L” category. However, for the price and its capabilities, I’m willing to forgive the aesthetic shortcoming.

Pros

  • Overall sharpness
  • Great bokeh
  • Powerful aperture
  • USM focus

Cons

  • Design

Best Wide-Angle
Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 Lens
5.0
$879.00

Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 Lens retains a constant f/2.8 aperture throughout the zoom range with aspherical elements that deliver impressive image quality.

Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM comes with 19 elements in 12 groups with seven diaphragm blades. Its minimum focus distance is 1,15 feet, and it comes with image stabilization that compensates for image shakes under dim lighting. The maximum magnification is 0,17x and the lens offers a USM focus system.

I liked the f/2.8 aperture which allows enough light to enter the sensor, while not being as expensive as other faster optics. Another reason why I chose it is the best Canon 77D wide-angle lens. The focus system is fast, responsive, and quiet. It can be used even for vlogging (although I used it exclusively for stills).

Image stabilization is a great asset when it comes to shooting stills handheld, and it didn’t disappoint not even under poor light. The overall image quality is satisfactory with sharp lines, solid contrast, and barely visible distortion at 55mm.

Design-wise, it is sturdy, yet heavy, which will deter some buyers. Yet, for the performance package, I would say it is a small price to pay. The only drawback I can come with is the high price, considering it is an EF-S lens, although it still offers a great price-performance ratio

Pros

  • Versatility
  • Solid aperture
  • USM focus
  • Sturdy design

Cons

  • Heavy
  • Price

Best All-in-one
Tamron 18-400mm f/3.5-6.3 Lens
4.5
$649.00

The focal length allows photographers to capture everything from cityscapes to distant objects with clear reproduction and vivid coloring.

Tamron 18-400mm f3.5-6.3 DI-II VC HLD is designed with 16 elements in 11 groups, and it offers a diagonal angle of view of 75° 33′ to 4°. It has seven rounded diaphragm blades. Its maximum magnification ratio is 0,34x. The lens offers an exceptional range for its price.

The reason why I choose these optics to represent the best Canon 77D all-in-one lens is the incredible versatility. The focal length allows photographers to capture everything from cityscapes to distant objects with clear reproduction and vivid coloring. The overall picture quality is astonishing, yet it retains a natural look.

Moreover:

I am yet to notice any vignetting or distortion, even at 400mm. The zooming ring is solid, yet it is too tight for my taste (maybe it goes a little more smooth with time). I was even happy with the bokeh effect, although it is not comparable to fast primes.

The aperture of an f/3.5 is good, and since the lens offers image stabilization, I didn’t have trouble focusing during the blue hour. The design is sturdy and it feels rock-solid, which is expected from a lens that covers such a focal length and offers OIS.

Pros

  • Incredible versatility
  • Fast focus
  • Sturdy design

Cons

  • Heavy
  • Zoom ring is too tight

Best Telephoto
Sigma 100-400mm f/5-6.3 Lens
4.5
$769.95

The focus system does a solid job of delivering fast and accurate responses.

Sigma 100-400mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM is built with 21 elements in 15 groups, with nine rounded diaphragm blades. It offers an angle of view of 24.4° to 6.2° and a close-up magnification of 0,26x. The first thing you will notice upon getting this lens is its amazing compactness, compared to other lenses in the same category.

Along with that comes the solid design which offers sturdiness and a great look, despite its compact design. The overall image quality is also a reason why it is the best Canon 77D telephoto lens.

All of the images I have taken came out neat and sharp, with mesmerizing color transmission and a great level of detail. The focus system does a solid job of delivering fast and accurate responses. I didn’t have an issue with missing shots and the sound level is tolerable. Moreover, it works extremely fast when the range is limited.

Certain downsides lie in the dock, which is required to work at maximum capacity and the limited aperture which can cause trouble during dim lighting, without the use of OIS. However, the lens is considerably cheaper than the competition and if your main goal is to shoot action at higher shutter speeds, then the lens is the best choice you can make.

Pros

  • Versatile focal length
  • Fast focus
  • OIS
  • Price

Cons

  • Limiting aperture
  • Docking is required for proper use

Best Macro
Canon EF-S 35mm f/2.8 Lens
4.5
$464.95

Canon EF-S 35mm f/2.8 is optimized for macro photography. For a 1.0x macro lens, it appears compact but more considerable compared to the competition.

Canon EF-S 35mm f/2.8 IS STM is built with 10 elements in 6 groups with seven rounded diaphragm blades. It offers a minimum focus distance of 5,12 inches and a macro reproduction ratio of 1:1 inches. The optics in the matter are the true macro lens, which means that at 1:1 the front element is about an inch away from the subject.

Of course, if you aim to shoot objects that don’t move, it will do a great job, but if you intend on shooting insects, it will require some practice. Another thing that crosses my mind is the need for an external light source since the lens will create shadows which could be problematic under a bad light.

However, all of this is the price for a hardcore macro lens, which many photographers will not object to. The design of the lens is solid, with sturdy plastics and a metal mount.

The image quality is another reason why it is the best Canon 77D lens. It offers great performance when it is wide open, with excellent color distribution and pleasing focus. If you press it to an f/4, the sharpness is extraordinary, with no distortion. The autofocus is accurate and quite smooth, while the OIS helps to retain the image quality under bad lighting.

Pros

  • Powerful aperture
  • 1:1 macro reproduction
  • Fast focus
  • OIS

Cons

  • Need for an external light source when shooting true macro
