Best Prime Lens for Portraits

Fujifilm XF 90mm f/2 deserved first place in the prime category. The lens has 11 elements in eight groups that ensure an absolute reduction of chromatic aberrations and produce sharp, vibrant images even at the widest aperture of f/2. The lens is also weather and dust-resistant, with seven seals on the barrel.

The focus goes as close as 60 cm with 0,3x magnification. XF is fast in focusing, depending on the focus point box size. On the larger sizes, I was able to get focus on flying birds mid-air.

Also:

It was easy to track players on the soccer field. On the smaller focus point sizes, it was a bit slower. Out-of-focus areas are not distracting, unlike some other lenses. The auto-focus is quick and precise in AF-S mode.

The image quality is decent, yet I would like higher contrast and less washed-out colors. You will generally need a higher exposure to capture stunning images.

The built quality is good, and the lens feels robust and durable. I recommend it to any photo enthusiast who loves photography but does not live off it.

Fujifilm XF 10-24mm f/4 has an angle of view of 110° – 61.2°, with a minimum working distance of 0.24 m. The f/4 aperture is constant throughout the zoom range, while the 14 elements in 10 groups ensure a substantial bokeh effect and a proper perspective.

For a technical part, I would like to add that the lens has internal focusing and zoom option, a lens extension, where the length remains the same throughout the zoom range.

When talking about photo sessions, at 10 mm, I found minimal distortion at the sides of the image, depending on the scene. It only happened when objects on the side of the image were closer to the sensor than the rest of the frame.

It is also important how you hold the camera, like pointing the lens up or down. The sharpness across the frame at f/4 is solid, and I saw no distortions from edge to edge.

For a zoom wide-angle, it is amazingly sharp, with beautiful crisp images and excellent small details. It is not the best lens for light-gathering capabilities, but it is decent enough to be worthy of purchase.

The size is also a plus. Even though it is a zoom lens with lots of glass elements inside the lens, it is still light enough and fits the bag quite nicely.

Fujinon XF 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 won my heart first and foremost due to its focal range, which is quite broad and comes in handy for a variety of situations.

Though I would prefer more degrees at the wide end and lesser value in the focal length, the lens does an excellent job whatsoever. The lens is not the fastest on the market, but since it is not a fast prime, it was not expected.

The sharpness of the images is excellent, with no aberrations or distortions at the edges. I have also noticed high contrast in all photos, which adds to the sharpness. The non-existence of flares is also worthy of praise.

Even though it is not the fastest lens:

It still delivered beautiful bokeh effects. You will get a stunning background blur if you choose your backgrounds and highlights correctly.

The minimum focusing distance is another plus. You can do it if you want to frame a flower close up. Of course, it is not 1:1 magnification, but it surpassed many prime lenses I have worked with. The zoom ring works smoothly with no jamming, and the general built quality of the lens deserves every praise.

Fujifilm XF 50-140mm f/2.8 is dust and water-resistant and works well in cold environments. If you consider the fact that it is a telephoto zoom lens, it is surprisingly light.

The lens has excellent image stabilization that is highly effective. Sometimes I wouldn’t say I like to use a tripod, and when shooting hand-held, even at the widest aperture, I could pull off rock-solid, sharp images.

It allowed me to use lower ISO thanks to its beneficial optical image stabilization. Auto-focus works flawlessly with this lens; it is speedy and precise and does its job without hunting.

The materials used in making this lens are of the highest quality. It feels reliable and robust, promising it can take a beating in a harsh environment.

If you are curious about the drawbacks of this lens, I must point out the low magnification factor, which will limit your close-up photography.

However:

You will get a beautiful bokeh effect, extremely fast and precise auto-focus, and a durable exterior for your money, so I would say it is worth it.

If you are searching for a high-quality macro lens, you can rest assured you will be happy with Fujifilm 60mm f/2.4 XF macro lens. The focal length is ideal for maintaining reasonable subject distance, and the 0.5 maximum magnification is about the top that can be hand-held yet still get pretty close.

One of the reasons I favor this lens is that it works very well for traveling with a small camera bag.

Upon starting the lens testing:

I used it wide open at f/2.4, and the image was the same in the corners as in the center. I didn’t see distortions or aberrations of any kind.

I also tested it outdoors when I shot insect backlit on a slide sorter. It was the same as if I was shooting with a microscope.

Closely cropped at 1:1 pixels, the images were terrific, with all the details in full glory. The auto-focus does a decent job, yet it is not perfect. Sometimes I missed a subject because of it, and at times (especially if the light was dim), it was slow.

The manual focus takes time to adjust, but it produces extraordinary images.
